Fujitsu laptop offers premium portability

Pick up the svelte Fujitsu LifeBook P1610, and you'll barely feel as if you're carrying a notebook PC. And no wonder: At 2.2 pounds, the US$2,419 (AUD$3045, as of 12/18/06) P1610 puts the "ultra" in ultraportable. The P1610 is similar in weight and size to its predecessor, the LifeBook P1510. (It's slightly slimmer at 1.4 inches deep, and it measures 9.1 by 6.6 inches.) Included, however, are several notable improvements, among them a reasonably roomy 80GB hard drive, and a PC Card slot in lieu of the P1510's integrated CompactFlash slot. Furthermore, the 8.9-inch, WXGA swiveling touch-screen display now has a higher resolution --1280 by 768 pixels -- and a proprietary coating that helps optimize how the image looks in bright sunlight. On the touch-screen display, you can use either your fingertips or the included (and exceptionally thin) stylus to navigate....

Toshiba Corp. almost doubled its profits while losses widened at Hitachi Ltd., reflecting a wider divergence in performance among Japanese electronics makers. While most Japanese electronics companies suffered a slump in recent years, battered by competition from cheaper rivals and price drops, some have staged stronger comebacks than others. Toshiba said strong sales of digital products, home appliances and flat-panel displays lifted its profits to 39 billion yen ($337.4 million) in the six months through September, from 14.6 billion yen it booked a year earlier. The profit jump came on a 9 percent increase in first-half sales to 3.162 trillion yen ($26.9 billion), from 2.9 trillion yen the previous year. Its semiconductor business especially boosted its profitability, the company said....

When Starbucks announced late last week that two laptops - each containing personal data on thousands of employees - had gone missing from its Seattle headquarters, the latte purveyor joined a growing list of well-known organizations that have suffered an embarrassing, and potentially costly, computer security breach. Starbucks (Charts) is not alone; In May, a Department of Veterans Affairs data analyst's laptop containing confidential info on 26.5 million veterans, military personnel and their spouses was swiped. Two months earlier, a laptop chock full of data on Fidelity Investments' clients was reported stolen. Ford, AIG and Ameriprise Financial have also suffered similar fates. ....

A FUJITSU ENGINEER who was called around to a punter's house to pick up a Sony battery as part of the company recall got a bit more than he bargained for. According to a spokesFujitsu the engineer was retrieving the laptop when it started to overheat and started to spew forth sparks. The laptop's owner received minor injuries in the incident, which is under investigation, the spokesFujutsu said. Fujitsu is recalling more than 280,000 lithium-ion laptop batteries made by Sony because microscopic metal particles left inside the battery, can cause them to short circuit.
