| Hitachi Provides Liquid-Cooling System for HP Machine | | Posted Friday, February 02, 2007 1:01:56 PM by Blog57 Team | | Hitachi's liquid-cooling system moves the fan found on the CPU heat sink in a typical computer, putting in on the computer's chassis where it can create more air flow while running slower and quieter. To transfer the heat from the CPU to the chassis fan, Hitachi relies on the high heat transfer capacity of the liquid cooling system. The system includes safety measures to protect against corrosion or leakage of the coolant liquid. Hitachi has already offered a liquid-cooled laptop and its technology has been used in other desktop and server products. HP claims to be the first manufacturer in the U.S. to offer Hitachi's liquid-cooling system in a workstation. Early last year, HP began selling a liquid-cooling system designed to cool rack units. The move to liquid cooling comes as the increasing performance of CPU, graphic chips and other components in computers demand more power and in turn generate more heat.... | |

| | | Thumbs down on deals | | Posted Thursday, January 11, 2007 3:04:31 PM by Blog57 Team | | Jefferson County rejected troubled departing Treasurer Mark Paschall's offer to buy his county- owned vehicle and computer for about half the estimated value. Paschall, under investigation for allegedly soliciting a kickback from a top aide he gave a $25,000 bonus, left office on Jan. 1 and returned the county property the next day, officials said Wednesday. Kathryn Heider, the county public information officer, said Paschall also returned his BlackBerry, office keys, entry badge and computer printer. Paschall, who was unavailable for comment, offered in December to buy the used computer and vehicle. The Jefferson County Commissioners rejected his offer of about $5,900 for the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, valued at $14,925. The computer, an HP Notebook laptop, was purchased by the county in 2005 for $1,201.... | |

| | | HP Laptop Keyboard Problems -- the Computer is Personal Again? ... | | Posted Saturday, December 09, 2006 1:04:11 PM by Blog57 Team | | While HP has done a nice job taking laptop market share from Dell and launching a slick marketing campaign using the slogan "the computer is personal again", we wonder why their quality control, tech support and respect for customers isn't following suit with this campaign. We present the woeful and now epic tale of the HP Pavilion dv8000 and other dv series laptops that have keyboards with a mind of their own. How it Started The HP Pavilion dv8000 notebook is a 17" multimedia laptop from HP that was sold in the first half of 2006 (view large image) It all started on a fateful June day when a poster in the NotebookReview.com forums posed the question "dv8000 series keyboard problems. Anyone else?" This poster had been thinking he was losing his mind based on the randomness of his keyboard registering keystrokes.... | |

Other sites posting deals early for Black Friday _ the day-after-Thanksgiving discount and shopping extravaganza _ include BF-06.com, Dealtaker.com and Blackfriday.gottadeal.com. Some stores are infuriated about having the covers yanked off their holiday surprises in advance. "Retailers are not a big fan of those sites," National Retail Federation spokeswoman Ellen Davis said.... | |

| | | Top four laptop makers shun wireless wait | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 7:11:30 AM by Blog57 Team | | The world's top four laptop makers will soon be shipping fast draft 802.11n (Draft N) wireless systems, according to Broadcom. Although Hewlett-Packard has not yet officially launched a Draft N laptop, the announcement is expected shortly. Lenovo has announced it will join Dell and Acer in shipping the fast wireless specification. "Lenovo is our third partner," said Mike Hurlston, vice president of Broadcom. "It's not yet announced, but we have the green light to say HP will be the fourth." Previous MIMO offerings haven't made it into laptops, he said, but the industry efforts on inter-operability have made it possible. Draft N laptops will give a step function in wireless performance, said Hurlston, with a speed of 270 Mbit/s now possible, even between chipsets from different vendors. "We expect 30 to 40 percent of notebooks to have Draft N by the back half of 2007," he said.... | |

| | | HP, VMware team on server virtualisation to replace PCs | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 1:07:55 PM by Blog57 Team | | Hewlett-Packard is teaming up with virtualisation vendor VMware to offer enterprises the option of re-centralizing end user desktops on central servers. It's the prospective rollback of the client/server revolution. Instead of employees being given their own computers, they would be served their Microsoft Office applications from a virtual machine in a data centre. The application running on a virtual machine would have its interactions streamed down to a user's thin client, or regular computer if a desktop machine was left in place. But the application logic would be performed on a server in a virtual machine. .... | |

| | | Some Internet Stocks Still Have Backbone | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 3:02:46 PM by Blog57 Team | | Well, perhaps not in a "party like it's 1999" sort of way. Yet a fistful of computer and software firms that help shape and support new ways to use the Internet have led the market's upswing since August. During the 2000-02 Internet stock meltdown, most dot-coms went bankrupt or plunged 95% to 99% off their highs. Many survivors, including router king Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO - News) and data-storage giant EMC (NYSE:EMC - News), are still lie miles below their 2000 peaks. Yet several Internet-related ETFs have notched 52-week highs as a small but growing number of companies are backing up recent stock strength with solid profit and sales growth. These leaders make software to defend against viruses or manage e-commerce. Others sell high-speed laptop PCs, servers and other gear that allow the storage and rapid downloading of movies, songs and other digital content.... | |

| | | Review: Have Notebook, Will Travel | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:29:19 PM by Blog57 Team | | When it comes to notebook PCs, there's no such thing as a level playing field, since users' needs and wants vary. But for business travelers, it's hard to beat the HP Compaq NC6400, a laptop that pulls together the best components to offer reliability without sacrificing economy or flexibility. As computer sellers know, prospective notebook buyers value different factors when choosing a product. Some will prefer speed over cost, others may focus on battery life and some might think weight is the top consideration. VARs must find a way to balance all of those needs while giving customers with what they want. Short of carrying dozens of models and brands, solution providers can consolidate their offerings by relying on highly customizable notebooks. And that's where the HP Compaq NC6400 stands out.... | |

| | | Irate Partners Blame AMD, Dell For Athlon Chip Shortage | | Posted Wednesday, November 01, 2006 7:13:44 AM by Blog57 Team | | System builders are irked about a severe shortage of Advanced Micro Devices Athlon 64 X2 processors and blame the chip maker's partnership with Dell. "It's a fiasco. There's no product in the channel. It's all going to Dell and Apple," said Glen Coffield, president of CheapGuys, a system builder in Orlando, Fla. "AMD is divorcing the channel." Coffield said AMD is hurting its loyal system builders, who feel they have been used and dumped now that the chip maker has a partnership with Dell and other top-tier OEMs. Dell formerly was an Intel-only system maker. But after Dell and AMD inked a deal, the Round Rock, Texas-based computer giant unveiled its first AMD-based PCs in September and first AMD-based servers in October. System builders said the timing makes the problem clear.... | |
