Michael Dell returns to take the reins
Posted Thursday, February 01, 2007 3:01:17 PM by Blog57 Team
Michael Dell yesterday dismissed his handpicked successor and retook control of the computer giant he founded 23 years ago, hoping to reverse its slide into second place. Mr. Dell, who is chairman, replaced Kevin Rollins as chief executive officer after reporting that quarterly results will again miss targets. The shakeup, which will see Mr. Rollins leave the company and the board of directors immediately, reflects the seriousness of an unprecedented slump at Dell Inc. In recent months the company has lost the title of the world's No. 1 PC maker to Hewlett-Packard Co., watched its core business shrink, and has become embroiled in accounting problems that have caused the company to miss financial filing deadlines. Until now, the two men worked side by side in Dell's Round Rock, Tex., headquarters, with adjacent offices and an open-door policy....

Toshiba unveils Vista laptop at CES

Toshiba is often the first computer maker to try new things. It had the first laptop with Wi-Fi. It was the first to add a DVD burner. And at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company offered its own unique machine built to run the new Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, due later this month. Toshiba's computer division, based in Irvine and Japan, spent two years working closely with Microsoft on the computer. That's why it has extra features you won't find in the competition. The R400 has its own share of firsts worthy of some oohs and ahhs. Part of the change is cosmetic. The company added a snow white shell with contrasting black edges to appeal to both men and women, said Kevin Roberts, product manager for Toshiba's digital products division....

You just got a shiny new desktop or laptop computer from Santa. It runs circles around your old computer. But now, the eternal question: How do you get rid of your old machine? Building a Better Battery

In "Building a Better Battery" (issue 14.11), a Rayovac flashlight battery was pictured above text about computer batteries bursting into flames. The layout was not intended to suggest that Rayovac batteries have caused computers to explode or that they are defective in any way. We regret any inference created by the photo. ....

Solutions: Strengthen signal from your wireless router to PC

I have had a recent disconnect problem with my Verizon DSL wireless. It happens repeatedly during each session. When I click the wireless icon for the repair menu, sometimes my connection is temporarily restored, but often this message appears: "Problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer." If I do nothing, the connection may be mysteriously restored. Could the router need to be replaced? I contacted a Verizon representative, but the problem persists. Do you have any ideas? I'm running XP on a clean Toshiba laptop. It sounds like you're not getting a strong enough signal between the wireless router and your PC. There are many things that can interfere with this signal: wireless phones, microwave ovens and walls, to name a few. Sometimes installing an additional piece of equipment referred to as a "range expander" or repeater will help boost the signal into hard-to-reach areas of your home....

Stolen computer may hold key to solving triple murder

A stolen laptop computer may be the key to unlocking the mystery of why a woman and her two sons were shot to death inside their Bethany home late Thursday, Nov. 2. The bodies of Melody Dang, 37, Steven Dang, 16, and Jimmy Dang, 12, were found dead at about 5:57 a.m., Friday, Nov. 3. Detectives say a Toshiba laptop computer was stolen at or around the time of the homicides. The silver portable computer, model M-45, could hold important clues, police say. Investigators would like any information the public has on this computer. Detectives with the Washington County Major Crimes Team and the Washington County Sheriff's Office have 18 detectives assigned to the case, including specialists in computer forensics and identity theft, said WCSO Sgt....

Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Lenovo Group Ltd., China's biggest personal-computer maker, may say profit fell for a second straight quarter on costs of cutting jobs and pricing competition from companies such as Dell Inc. Net income for the three months ended Sept. 30 probably declined to $40 million from $46 million a year earlier, according the median estimate of six analysts in a Bloomberg survey. The Chinese company, which is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, is scheduled to report fiscal second-quarter earnings after the 4 p.m. market close today. Chairman Yang Yuanqing has expanded into mobile phones to try to boost profit as he integrates the PC unit the company bought in May last year from International Business Machine Corp. for $1.25 billion. Lenovo faces increased competition in China, where Dell and Hewlett-Packard Co....

Assessing in-flight battery risk

Distraught and scrambling off the United Airlines plane, the man ran out of the jet bridge past passengers waiting to get on board, clutching his laptop. Smoke poured from it. He ran to a relatively unoccupied area of the gate and threw the Lenovo computer on the ground. It ignited, shooting a 2-foot flame upward. "A few people yelled `terrorist,' and ran away," said Tom Mustaine, 30, who was sitting at an adjoining gate and witnessed the event at Los Angeles International Airport. "The thing gave off a terrible, chemical smoke. It burned for about 2 minutes before they extinguished it. The whole gate area filled with noxious smoke. People were gagging." This incident, which occurred in September, was the latest, most public, and perhaps the most dramatic in a string of laptop battery fires....

Toshiba updates laptop line with Core 2 Duo, bigger HDDs

As is usually the case when it comes to picking up a new laptop, you start to regret your purchase shortly afterwards because a beefier version is inevitably offered for the same (or lower) price. Toshiba has gone around upgrading some of their notebooks -- Portege M500, Satellite A100, Satellite M100 -- most notably tossing in some juicy Core 2 Duo goodness. The A100 is probably the best of the bunch with its 15.4-inch display, Core 2 Duo processor (of unspecified speed), "enhanced AV functions", and a super-large 160GB internal hard disk drive. The 12.1-inch M500 and graphics-centric M100 boast similar upgrades. Pricing for all three laptops starts at around US$1,750. Okay, you can stop trying to eat that CD now. Read [Via aving.net] ....
